Preparing Aerial Equipment for Winter Storage
Proper winterization protects your investment and ensures equipment is ready when you need it. This guide covers comprehensive winter storage procedures for scissor lifts, boom lifts, and vertical mast lifts.
Pre-Storage Inspection
Before winterizing, perform a thorough inspection:
Document Current Condition
- Note any existing damage or wear
- Record hour meter reading
- Photograph overall condition
- List any needed repairs
Address Known Issues
Winter storage is ideal for completing deferred maintenance:
- Replace worn seals
- Fix minor leaks
- Address electrical issues
- Update any outdated components
Battery Care - Critical for Electric Equipment
Lead-Acid Batteries
- Fully charge batteries before storage
- Clean terminals with baking soda solution
- Apply terminal protector spray
- Top off electrolyte with distilled water
- Connect to maintenance charger or schedule monthly charging
Temperature considerations:
- Fully charged: safe to 0°F
- 50% charged: freezes at 10°F
- Discharged: freezes at 32°F
Lithium-Ion Batteries
- Charge to 50-60% (not 100%) for long-term storage
- Disconnect if possible
- Store in temperature-controlled space if available
- Avoid storage below -4°F
Hydraulic System Winterization
Fluid Considerations
Check hydraulic fluid specifications for low-temperature viscosity. Standard AW-32 or AW-46 oils may thicken significantly below 20°F.
Options:
- Drain and refill with cold-weather fluid
- Use synthetic hydraulic fluid rated for low temps
- Plan to warm equipment before spring operation
Cylinder Protection
- Fully retract all cylinders
- Apply light oil to exposed rod surfaces
- Cover any exposed rod area
- Release pressure from system
Pump and Motor
- Run system briefly before storage
- Ensure pump is primed with fresh fluid
- Cover exposed motor areas
Tire and Wheel Care
Solid Tires
- Clean debris from tread
- Inspect for chunking or damage
- No special winter prep needed
Pneumatic Tires
- Inflate to maximum recommended pressure
- Consider placing on stands to prevent flat spots
- Inspect sidewalls for cracking
Wheel Hubs
- Check for play in bearings
- Repack grease if due
- Inspect seals
Protecting the Platform and Controls
Cover Installation
Use breathable equipment covers:
- Prevents moisture accumulation
- Blocks UV degradation
- Protects controls from elements
Control Protection
- Apply electrical contact protector to connectors
- Cover joysticks and buttons
- Seal access panels with weatherstrip
Platform Surface
- Clean and dry platform deck
- Apply rust inhibitor to steel surfaces
- Check non-slip coating condition
Storage Location Considerations
Ideal Storage
- Indoor, climate-controlled
- Dry concrete floor
- Away from direct sunlight
- Protected from pests
Outdoor Storage
If outdoor storage is unavoidable:
- Use high-quality cover
- Position on gravel or pavement (not bare ground)
- Block wheels
- Check monthly for water accumulation
Monthly Winter Check
Even in storage, perform monthly:
- Visual inspection for damage or intrusion
- Battery charge verification or charging cycle
- Run engine/motor briefly if possible
- Check cover integrity
- Inspect for pest activity
Spring Startup Procedure
Before returning to service:
- Remove covers gradually
- Fully charge batteries
- Check all fluid levels
- Operate all functions slowly
- Perform full operational inspection
- Complete any needed maintenance
